The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo | By Taylor Jenkins Reid

Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Let me start out by saying that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is not for everyone. While I thought this was a very well written love story, I don’t think the majority of my readers would love the content. However, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a great book to discuss at book club. And, I personally enjoyed this read!

Evelyn Hugo the Actress

The last two books, The Maid, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, have both had very complex main characters. They have lended themselves to great discussion. Evelyn was someone I struggled to love and I also struggled to hate. She is quintessentially Hollywood and also a family women. I admired her go getter spirit and I also struggled with her inability to let the world see her true self.

Synopsis

This is the story of the life of Evelyn Hugo, Hollywood icon. Monique, an unknown writer for Vibrant magazine, is hand selected by Ms. Hugo herself. The question presents itself, why Monique?? And, will she be able to get the tell-all everyone wants about this legendary actress and her seven husbands?

My Takeaway

Authenticity is something so rare and valued, and why is It that most of us get more and more comfortable owning ourselves as we age? If only we could let ourselves be fully visible and vulnerable in the here and now.

This is not a Christian book, but I couldn’t help but think about how finding my identity in Christ helps me to own who he created me to be. It helps me be fully real and honest about who I am because He is the one person whose opinion of me matters. I can’t imagine being a celebrity and feeling like I need to be what others want me to be. Trying to portray myself in a certain light and not be able to just comfortably be myself. What a struggle that would be.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is so beautifully written, I read It in three days. I couldn’t put It down. At the very start of the book you are presented with a secret and when It is revealed at the end you are not disappointed. The secret propels you through the entire story and you just need to know!

Next month we will be reading another book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones and the Six. I am so excited!
